Peace comes to Northern Ireland, and organized crime takes control over the border. Bob Lauder, the regional director of the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), said "the lack of border controls since the ceasefires has made it easier for criminals to move between North and South":
"As the political landscape in Northern Ireland has changed, allowing the relaxation of controls in the interests of the rights of citizens of the North and South of Ireland, organised criminals have taken advantage for their own purposes. Organised crime gangs from both Northern Ireland and the Republic are capable of impacting on communities on both sides of the border and often attempt to use the existence of two jurisdictions to frustrate law enforcement activity."
