Four Memphis, TN police officers have been indicted for allegedly kidnapping and raping local prostitutes at least one of whom was an underage girl. Hank Dudding from Memphis Commercial Appeal reports:
Information about the officers began to surface when the department's Organized Crime Unit began a wide-ranging assault on drug dealing and prostitution earlier this year, an effort that has netted more than 235 arrests so far. Once it appeared Memphis Police officers could be involved in wrongdoing, OCU officers called in the Inspectional Services Bureau, the department's internal affairs unit, to investigate the officers.
The Memphis Police Department and Shelby County District Attorney deserve enormous credit for tackling the problem rather than sweeping it under the rug, and their decisive action demonstrates how the credibility of law enforcement agencies can be affirmed rather than undermined when police corruption raises its ugly head.
