John Volz, the U.S. Attorney who prosecuted New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello and the political establishment that ran Louisiana, died yesterday as reported by John Pope for The Times-Picayune. In 1981 Volz obtained guilty verdicts in a bribery case known as Brilab against Marcello and Charles Roemer -- the former Commissioner of Administration and father of ex-Governor Buddy Roemer -- although their convictions were overturned in 1989. At a 1990 press conference "after getting the news that he was being replaced, Mr. Volz defended his office's record": "'I think we have clearly sent a message that no one is above the law,' he said. 'In the eyes of most people this office stands for honest, corrupt-free government.'"
