Chicago Outfit killer Frank Calabrese Sr., convicted on racketeering charges involving multiple murders in the 2007 Family Secrets trial, was holding onto cash from the days when Al Capone ruled the streets.
Last year the feds seized about $750,000 from the mob killer's suburban home, and now the U.S. Marshal's Service will auction off some rare mint condition $500 and $1,000 bills from the 1920s and 1930s which were included within the stash as reported by Chuck Goudie and Barb Markoff for WLS:
Today, the highest denomination printed by the government is $100. So, well-preserved, high denomination currency is frequently worth more than its face value. In some recent auctions of similar $1,000 currency, individual bills have gone for eight or nine times the face value.
The feds also seized about 1,000 pieces of jewelry including loose diamonds from Calabrese, and they will be put up to bid at a future auction.
