Cops in Fort Lauderdale, FL have deployed a mobile surveillance unit dubbed The Peacemaker which it parks in crime-plagued neighborhoods to conduct 24/7 monitoring as reported by Ihosvani Rodriguez for the Sun Sentinel:
Mixing high tech with simplicity, the in-your-face strategy is straightforward: load an out-of-service armored truck with some of the latest surveillance equipment available and decorate it with police emblems. Then, simply leave it parked in front of trouble spots. "Make no mistakes about it," said Detective Travis Mandell. "We want people to know that we are watching the bad guys."
Apparently, only nuisance criminals like whores and dealers who operate in plain sight are targeted, and no word on whether cops and prosecutors in South Florida intend to deploy The Peacemaker outside places which are run by wise guys or where dirty politicians meet. You see, crime fighting generally is more about eliminating the appearance of low-level crime in order to stop citizen complaints rather than targeting those powerful criminals who operate under the veneer of legitimate fronts or community respectability.
Well thats because we only care about the crooks who are bothering us, the ones we have to look at everyday. We could care less what goes on behind closed doors. Although common sense tells us that the politicians get away with practically everything, things that average joes like us cant get away with.

On a further note, I think the people feel powerless against a system that seems to be out of reach and untouchable, and we realize that there will always be crooks in office no matter what. For one thing thats how they got there in the first place. Gangster Lucky Luciano hit the nail on the head when he said "Behind every great fortune there is a crime," or words to that effect. I dont think nobody ever makes it to the top without stepping on a few heads to get there. However it does feel good to see politicians get busted, but I believe there are people far more powerful than we could ever imagine, that have never been and never will be caught. Call it the Illuminati, New World Order or whatever you like, but they will never be caught because no one is watching them, but believe me they are watching everyone else. That is what I call true power. And it sucks, but its reality.
