The Bonannos once were among the power elite in New York City's mob circles due to drug trade profits but these days they're running around the streets like chickens with their heads cut off after facing a federal onslaught fueled by mob informants, and it's been a wild rise and fall as reported by Brad Hamilton for the New York Post. Although "some believe the Bonannos . . . are as close to extinction as any ruling family has ever been," others warn "they will rebuild."
The Bonannos will eventually rebuild, but the Colombos will have a much harder time I think. The Bonannos still have Sicilian factions which gives them a lot of strength, but the Colombos are much smaller in size and therefore will have a much harder time recovering from their injuries. The other 3 families are doing pretty well considering the facts of today's American Mafia.
