The European Union isn't thrilled that Italian bureaucrats failed to keep the 'Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia from siphoning off 307 million euros or $465 million in highway construction funds, and has ordered Italy to reimburse the money as reported by Bruno Waterfield and Nick Squires for The Telegraph: "The investigation found that more than 381 million euros was lost through fraud, fake contracts and ghost road works. * * * L"eandra D'Antone, an historian, described it as 'a true Italian shame' in a country that is not easily shocked by tales of corruption."
