Richard "Shellack Head" Cantarella, the Bonanno capo who flipped to become a government witness, has left the federal witness protection program to star in Oxygen reality show Unprotected which premiers on April 11 according to the network's website: "now out of the program and raising two teenagers in Scottsdale, Arizona, viewers will get an up-close and amusing glimpse into the lives of this New York family as they adapt to their unfamiliar suburban surroundings, try to shred old habits and stay true to themselves."
Cantarella pleaded guilty to three murders but received no prison time when sentenced by Brooklyn federal judge Nicholas Garaufis in September 2013 due to his government cooperation as reported by the Daily News. At the sentencing hearing Cantarella said good riddance to the life and the hold it once had over his family:
"The best thing I did was get my son out of this life," Cantarella told the judge, "and the possibility of my male grandchildren getting into this life. It's a very treacherous and cunning life and who knows how they would have turned out."
Cantarella helped bring down one-time Bonanno boss Vincent "Vinny Gorgeous" Basciano who now is serving out two life terms at the supermax facility in Florence, CO.
