Hell has frozen over; a lawyer has gotten a conscience.
Last year Cory Leshner pleaded guilty for his role in the alleged mob-orchestrated takeover and looting of the publicly-traded mortgage company FirstPlus Financial Group, Inc., and now the shyster lawyer is a government witness at the ongoing racketeering trial against the remaining defendants including reputed Lucchese soldier Nicodemo Scarfo a/k/a Nicky Jr.
Under cross-examination by defense lawyers Leshner yesterday testified that he made the cooperation deal with federal prosecutors because "my conscience had caught up with me" as reported by Andrew Seidman for the Inquirer.
Can we get an Amen?!
Not since the conversion of St. Paul on the road to Damascus has there been such a miraculous transformation of an otherwise hopeless soul.
Four other lawyers are co-defendants with Nicky Jr. in the racketeering trial as reported by Julia Terruso for the Inquirer: "New York City attorneys Gary McCarthy and David Adler, Texas attorney William Maxwell, and Scarfo's longtime criminal defense attorney, Donald Manno, will aim to prove they were working in a legal capacity - representing mobsters - and not working with them."
Cory Leshner should receive a special commendation from the bar association for joining the ranks of that rare breed of a lawyer with a conscience.
