Fashion-model-turned-English-professor Brad Gooch has released his new memoir Smash Cut which takes a look at his walk on the wild side during New York's hedonistic years including outings at gay club The Mineshaft in the 1970s and 1980s as reported by William van Meter for The New York Times:
The book inevitably barrels toward the plague of AIDS. "At the time, you had no idea what was going on," Mr. Gooch said, "and whether it was coming from the air-conditioning system in the Mineshaft. It was like science fiction."
The Mineshaft operated at 835 Washington Street in Manhattan's meatpacking district from 1976 until closed by city officials in 1985 at the height of the AIDS epidemic, and was widely rumored as a mobbed-up venture according to the new book The Mafia and the Gays by Phillip Crawford Jr.
