Sylvia Rivera and African American drag queen Marsha P. Johnson co-founded Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries in 1970 in New York, and Ms. Rivera stated that the specific purpose of STAR was: “We were trying to get away from the Mafia’s control at the bars."
